An understudy (or swing) is an actor who learns another actor’s role or roles to be able to replace them if needed. As a Rockette, I was a ‘swing’ which meant I had to learn the steps and parts of the 36 Rockettes on the line in the event I had to take someone’s place for a performance. Understudies are essential to a show because, “The show must go on!”
